27th October Meeting - Guest Speaker Lynley McKerrow

Lynley McKerrow will be our guest speaker at the Rotary lunch meeting on 27 October. She will introduce Abbeyfield’s shared housing model and discuss the work underway to bring this community-focused housing option for seniors to Invercargill.

The concept reached New Zealand in 1991 through Wakefield GP Dr Ted Bassett, who had encountered Abbeyfield while visiting the United Kingdom to explore retirement accommodation models. On his return, Dr Bassett gathered an energetic group of supporters, and Abbeyfield New Zealand was born. Abbeyfield New Zealand Incorporated was formally established as a charitable organisation in 1992.

Lynley is spearheading local efforts to establish an Abbeyfield house in Invercargill. In her presentation, she will explain how a steering group has been formed to initiate the development, raise community awareness, and build support for the project.

Abbeyfield homes are designed for independent seniors aged over 65. Residents enjoy private rooms while sharing welcoming, family-style kitchen and living areas, offering both independence and companionship.

There are currently 16 Abbeyfield houses in New Zealand, providing secure rental accommodation for super annuitants.

Each resident has a private studio and ensuite with external access. A housekeeper prepares two meals a day, helping to create a comfortable home environment and a strong sense of community.

Lynley will also share an update on the public meetings held so far and outline how local groups and community members can learn more about the Invercargill initiative.
