Sumaria Beaton from Awarua Synergy shared top tips and did some myth busting at Tuesday’s lunch meeting.
Sumaria, General Manager of Awarua Synergy, founded the Bluff Healthy Homes Research & Education Project. Awarua Synergy was created out of the Bluff Healthy Homes project and has expanded with 15-22 staff seasonally and 14 sub-contractors delivering energy and eco-power solutions across Southland.
Passionate about sharing information to educate people on how to create a warmer, drier – healthier home, Sumaria delivers workshops on insulation, moisture management and ways to reduce energy costs to create a healthier living environment to community groups locally and nationally.
Sumaria shared some of the workshop content with members including recommended temperature guidelines, how insulation can save energy, the importance of reducing moisture and fresh air.

Members who attended each received a hygrometer to measure the humidity, the amount of water vapor in the air of their homes and some top tips on what they could do in their own homes to create more efficiency and energy savings.

One of the tips shared was the “bucket test” – put a 10L bucket into the shower. If it fills up in less than a minute, savings could be made. A different showerhead could make the difference.
The cost of power bills was a hot topic. https://www.powerswitch.org.nz is the link to the free and independent Consumer NZ website, that has a calculator to compare residential power plans from a range of providers, covering 98% of the market in NZ.
