Reader Writer Exam Support - Opportunity to Volunteer for a Service Project to ‘Create Lasting Impact’ in 2027
Over the years, the Rotary Club of Invercargill’s partnership with Southland Girls’ High School (SGHS) has created a number of opportunities to support students.
A particularly impactful aspect of this partnership has been supporting students who qualify for Special Assessment Conditions (SAC) during examinations, as Reader and / or Writers.
Working one-to-one with a student, a Reader reads exam questions aloud, while a Writer records the student’s spoken answers. These straightforward tasks can make a significant difference to a student completing an Exam.
Education is one of Rotary International’s seven areas of focus, and this initiative reflects our Club’s commitment to empowering young people through learning.
No Volunteers Needed This Year
SGHS has confirmed that it has the required level of reader–writer support in place for the November 2026 exams, so assistance from our Club will not be needed.
We extend our sincere thanks to the members, family members and work colleagues—who have volunteered their time to help with this project over the years. Your contribution has provided practical, personalised support to local students when it mattered most.
Looking Ahead to 2027
Our Club remains on the school’s contact list for 2027. If you would like to take part in this rewarding form of community service, please contact Youth Director Trish Lindsay.
Prospective volunteers complete an application form, undergo Police vetting and attend a one-hour training session with the SGHS SENCO (Specialist Educational Needs Coordinator).
Subject knowledge is not required. As a Reader all that’s required is the ability to read exam questions out loud clearly or if you are a Writer, write down the student’s answers.
You can choose to be a Reader or a Writer or both. The timeframes are: applications in September, training early October, with Exams in November.
