Weekly Letter:
Do you have a Life Portfolio?
Most financial advisers focus on helping clients manage their money. However with the ongoing commoditisation of asset-allocated investment portfolios, there is an increasing focus by advisers on adding value to retiree clients outside of the portfolio itself. Perhaps the biggest area in which advisers can add value for retirees is not merely in the technical areas of planning, but in helping them make the life transition to retirement, and figure out how to live happy and fulfilled lives in retirement.
The key to retirement well-being is to have a balanced “life portfolio” where the retiree focuses on four key areas:
- Health (and the activities to maintain and support health)
- People (family, friends, community organizations, and the ability to create new contacts as needed)
- Pursuits (work, volunteering, hobbies, community activities, caregiving, travel, etc.)
- Places (home and community)
Even with retirement finances well intact, retirees who have a gap in one or more of these areas may still struggle with their personal retirement well-being.
Helping a prospective retiree explore how they will round out the key areas of their People, Pursuits, Places, and Health life portfolio in retirement creates a unique opportunity for advisers to enhance the client relationship, delving into the areas beyond the finances alone (acknowledging that finances do impact how retirees may try to fulfil their life portfolio).
Each of us should have a life portfolio as well as a financial portfolio. Just as a financial portfolio requires focus, diversification, and management, so does a life portfolio.

Hospice Fundraiser
The Hop”N”Vine is as far as anyone knows the Southernmost Beer and Wine Festival in the World. It’s an offering of unique craft beers, ciders and wines along with numerous food offerings that compliment the drinks.
Among the big beer names attending will be Emerson’s, Behemoth, Garage Project, Epic, Catlins, and Tuatara. There will also be several new and small breweries attending with beers and ciders only available on the day.
This is an event that will appeal to just about anyone looking for a good day out. Doors open at 12 with music from Triple Shot, Che Fu and a few other local favourites. There will be a variety of activities happening as well from Frisbee Golf to Turkish shaves and haircuts.
Now in its third year, and with a bigger venue to give festival-goers a truly memorable experience, Hop’n’Vine is set to serve up a fun-filled day that has something for everyone.
“ an amazing experience with several different themed zones, and a food truck alley, so people will be able to check out all the different areas, or hang out in their favourite,”
Tickets are available from the Invercargill City Council and Chamber of Commerce ticket outlets or check out the Facebook page”
