Monthly Letter:
Fellow Rotarians,
One of the good things of increasing age and retirement is that one does not have to in any particular place at any particular time.In other words, time is your own to do with as you please. To be in this happy state of contentment does however require some preparation and thought as to how you fill in your day with meaningful occupations. It also needs thought of your financial preparations so that funds do not run out before you reach the end of the “ piece of string”,which is an open ended question. Plenty of interests and hobbies are a must and cultivation of friendships is also essential as it is easy to become introverted, boring, and thereby alone.Loneliness of an individual is one of the worst states to be in as it can lead to depression, ill health, and despair. It is essential to care for your friends and to be in contact regularly. The exact opposite of the fate of that University student in Christchurch whom no one missed for 8 weeks. I find it incredible that no one thought to ask where he was or why he wasn’t at meals or lectures. However I do not know the details of his demise,as he may have planned it that way.
Personally,I find the days are too short to do all the chores that need to be done around the property, with a house in Christchurch where I can sit in the sun and watch the grandkids play sports.Sitting in the sun in a comfortable chair takes a bit of beating! Also with an interest in vehicles which always seem to need attention, and an interest in brewing whisky, which after a few samples shortens the day even further, you can see that I have a few problems!
Whatever spins your wheels, enjoy it and make the most of it and the good things we have around us.
Yours in Rotary, Alastair Reekie
