From the Editor:

Hi everyone

Hope this bulletin finds everyone safe, well and doing ok in their bubble(s).

Just incase anyone has lost count of our days in lockdown - today - Thursday 16th April is our 22nd day in lockdown since Wednesday 25th March 11.59am.  There is some suggestion that today we may get more clarity on when and how lockdown may end.

Zoom meetings are on the way to becoming a new 'normal' for Rotary during this time.  Our Club's first 'zoom' social meeting, Friday 3rd April, was attended by 12 members, DG Tania popped in for a chat, we had an 'unexpected' appearance by a scantily clad lad, as well as a lot of laughs.  The District are having 'Zoom' chats Monday to Thursday night each week during lockdown where you can pop into chat for 5 mins or stay for the hour - details of meeting times below.

In this bulletin

-   more of your Club Directors in lockdown isolation
-  we hear from 3 of our Exchange students how lockdown is going where they are
-  did you know Covid19 is keeping lexicographers busy?

Thanks to the members who sent in a photo of what they have been doing in lockdown.

If you would like to contribute an article, a photo or something else that is in the spirit of Rotary, that our Club members might enjoy, please email to me: lmfkjs@xtra.co.nz.

Kia Kaha - Take care out there                                                                                 Lisa-Maree

Working from home continues to have challenges!

Not just NZ under lockdown

Covid19 Lockdowns are happening all over the world.  The Club and our members have many connections across the world, in this edition, we have an update on how Covid19 is for 3 of our Exchange Students.  Thanks to Stephen O'Connor for the photos and updates.

Signe - Paris

"Anders and I decided to stay here in Paris as we have our apartment here and all our things. We both work from home and that’s working well for both of us - we are lucky as neither one of our jobs are largely impacted by the corona crisis, and we both have the same amount of work as usual but that is most likely because we both work in healthcare. On the other hand, we do all meetings virtually with our respective teams - even Friday drinks are virtual now😅
We have been in quarantine for more than two weeks now and France have decided to extend it until Easter. It’s pretty strict as we are only allowed out for grocery shopping or to do exercise such as going for a run. And when we do leave the house we need to bring a certificate with our signature, today’s date and time of when we left the house. But luckily we have our backyard so we can sit outside if we need some air. So it’s indeed strange times and hard to accept and get used to. But we’re safe and have a strong mindset so we manage.
Anders’ parents just moved to Greenland. Egon (his dad) got a new job opportunity as the accounting director for the Greenlandic autonomy and his mother succeeded getting a position as a nurse there too so they are very happy and it’s a big dream of theirs that’s finally coming true. They arrived just before the borders and flight companies closed all freight forth and back so that’s really lucky. They are in quarantine as well but there has only been two cases before the borders got closed so it seems they managed to close down everything before it spread too wide.
My parents are doing well too under the circumstances. The ministers of health has ordered all dentists to close down their practice for 3,5 months(!) so my mother is frustrated that she has nothing to do for that long time but they’re financially stable so it shouldn’t have that big of an impact on their economy. Maybe she can take this time to take care of herself and do some nice things for herself.
Indeed all travel plans have been cancelled for a while. Let’s see how it all goes.
Hopefully we can go home and visit our family and friends in Denmark this summer. But even that isn’t certain yet. It’s really interesting to see how we have all become reliant on a globalized world. It’s great with some new perspective to it all.
Love and hugs from Paris to you all"

Signe was hosted by our Club in 2008 / 2009.

Camille - Madrid
"Now on day 14 of a kind of indefinite quarantine. This hasn't been easy but I'm doing my best to keep going and stay positive. I'm locked down in Madrid which is one of the most impacted, dangerous cities in Europe right now. My family is in France and they are doing good. I've been working from home the past couple of weeks and will until at least the 30th of April. I just signed a permanent contract at EA as a linguistic expert for FR
I'm glad that you are all home and safe and hope that NZ will not be as impacted as we are 🙌 take care of yourself, let's have a call sometime? Lots of love ❤️ "

Camille was hosted by our Club in 2011 / 2012.

Fena - Chile
Fena is in her fourth year of University with two years to go.  Fena and her family have been in voluntary lockdown since 20th of March, both parents are in the risk range.  Fena sounds like she is doing ok in lockdown with lots of activities at home, including making a doghouse for her dog, Dalila.  Fena indicated that things were not good in the local economy and her mum's job has been affected.

Fena was hosted by our Club in 2016 / 2017

Need anything picked up during lockdown?:
Paddy O'Brien, who was scheduled  to be our Guest Speaker for the April 21 Meeting, has been keeping busy over the last few weeks.  Paddy and Carolyn have been doing grocery and prescription pick ups for anyone who is unable to do themselves during the Alert 4 lockdown.    Below are the details of how to connect with Paddy if you or someone you know could use this assistance.
Well done Paddy & Carolyn for doing this in our Community!

Covid19 - Did you know?:
There is so much information coming at us everyday for COVID-19.  New words, terms and phrases we are hearing everyday, with some of us beginning to use this new vocabulary ourselves in an our everyday conversations.
Lexicographers, who research / compile words to go into dictionaries, have been busy with dictionary updates.  Both Oxford English Dictionary and Mirriam-Webster have confirmed they have made unplanned updates for words connected with Covid19.
Some of the new words / definitions include:
-  self-isolate
-  elbow bump
-  social distancing
-  flatten the curve
-  infodemic
-  self-quarantine
-  PPE or personal protective equipment
-  WFH or working from home
-  staycation
