Member lockdown letter:

Gratitude and Hope: feelings of a foreign family.

My name is Marcel, my wife Celina and my sons Davi (13) and João (10), a brief introduction to those who don't know us. Before coming to NZ, I was working at my company with my dad. My wife was teaching at university, and my children were finishing another year at their school.
In 2018, we started our most significant family plan, motivated by leaving our comfort zone, learning English, having an overseas experience and living a new culture. Well, beginning this challenge, we arrived in NZ in February 2019, with all possible uncertainty, but with great love and faith to live this experience.
Today, a year and three months later, with several obstacles overcome and others to succeed, we are living in another very different and unusual moment, which was not in our plans, the Coronavirus time. The difference is that this storm is not just ours; it cames for everyone. And that today we are grateful for being here in New Zealand facing it.
Coping with COVID-19 is happening different in each country, in Brazil ..., well I didn't come here to talk about how they are dealing with this situation; however, we just asked God protection for those who are there, especially our family and friends. Here in NZ, the actions are well-coordinated, and everyone together is working to flatten the curve.

Exposing that, how is it being to live as an immigrant within this situation? With all the uncertainties that plague at that moment.

Dealing with uncertainties, within an uncertain plan, strengthens us as a person. We are every day discussing, thinking, planning different scenarios and probabilities. Lockdown is very challenging for everyone, especially for immigrants due to unknowing the future. As we planned more in the medium and long term, and today we need to review plans daily and look the news.
Therefore, some pillars are essential to face this awkward moment. The fundamental pillar is our faith, our God, regardless of religion, this is our hope, our love. The other one is the family, "the bubble", providing emotional support and love. In my home, when one is feeling sad, or anxious, others come and talk, motivate, this is the way. Last but not least, the friendship pillar, our friends, near or far, they will always be present, even online or personally.
Thus, I'm writing to thank for all friends in Invercargill, from the Rotary Club, from SIT, from my work, from the church, from the Brazilians community and others, for spontaneous friendships. Everyone is unique by encouraging us and fill us with hope to continue our dream of living here and feel that New Zealand is increasingly our home; all of you are part of our new family.

Many thanks for all of my fellas Rotarians

Marcel & Celina family.
