Social Event - Bike Ride - Riverton to Invercargil

The social committee are planning a beach bike ride from Riverton to Invercargill on Saturday 22 March,  starting with brunch at Jacob's bakehouse cafe at 11.30am. 

You could ride there pre-lunch or be transported to Riverton.  

How can you get involved? 

  • You can either ride to and from Riverton or just to Invercargill
  • Join riders for lunch at Jacob’s bakehouse for lunch at 11.30am
  • Support with transport logistics in helping get riders to Riverton.

Working Bee - Conyers Street - Part I

Part I of the project is to move a pile of roof tiles sitting on the section in Conyers Street, where the Breathing Space units are located that need shifted.
 
People with wheelbarrows and sack barrows are asked to come along for an hour on Thursday 27th March at 6pm to move the roof tiles from the section to the neighbouring property where they will be stored by the site owner.
 
Part II of the project is to move the bricks, that are to be re-purposed to create a small patio area in the corner of the property as pictured below.
 

Lawn clippings in corner of section need to be raked up and bagged and removed from section.

Patio prepration - ground needs to be leveled, weed matted and sand create a bed to lay the bricks, with timber framing for edging.

If you are keen to be involved can help out for an hour on Thursday 27th March  - please contact Helen on 027 310 8587 to confirm you can come, the task you would like to assist with  and what items you can bring along.
 
If you cant assist on Thursday but keen to support in some way please contact Helen to discuss the day / time for Part II.

The units in Conyers Street have been established for the use of Breathing Space Southland Charitable Trust (BSSCT)  for temporary accommodation for clients who meet the Trust's referral criteria.
 
The units project was a follow on Rotary project following the sale of the Rotary Dream Home in 2018.  A committee made up of representatives of each Rotary Club have been working on the unit project over the recent years.  The units are almost complete awaiting final sign off from the Council.

James Savage

Mysteries of AI Unravelled

James is the Research Manager at the Southern Institute of Technology, and in this role he supports staff research activity across the institution,

and provides advice and training on a variety of topics including the challenges and opportunities of generative AI.

James' research background is behavioural ecology and conservation, and he sits on the National Committee on Data in Research and on the Technical Advisory Board of the International Research Data Alliance.

Working Bee - Conyers Street - Part II

Lincoln Students

Our Club has been asked to support with billeting / homestays for 2025 Lincoln Students visiting Southland. 

The dates hosts are required are Wednesday 9th April and Thursday 10th April.

Helen McCurdy is co-ordinating this club fundraiser that also links with our ongoing support to Education.

Evening meals and breakfast are be required to be provided and transport to/from their meeting location (Workingman’s Club).

The Club receives a payment per night per student for the Homestay(s) / billeting so is a good / easy fundraiser for us as a Club.

I was lucky enough to be sponsored by the Invercargill Rotary club to attend the Rotary National Science and Technology Forum 2025.In January, we spent two action packed weeks in Auckland, learning, meeting new people and having a lot of fun!

Hi, I’m Kimberly, a student at Menzies College who was lucky enough to be sponsored by the Invercargill Rotary Club to attend the Rotary National Science and Technology Forum 2025. Earlier this year, we spent two full-on fun and educational weeks in Auckland. Learning lots about science and technology courses on offer in Auckland, meeting heaps of new people and trying fun new things!

Haylee-Chanel Simeon (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Kauwhata, Ngāti Raukawa) is the owner of Hayz at the Anchorage in Bluff, where she showcases the rich flavours of Murihiku Southland. Her work has earned national and international acclaim, including being named among Cuisine magazine’s 2024 Top 50 Women in Food & Drink and winning the RWNZ1 Bountiful Table Award 2023/24. Hayz at the Anchorage was also recognised in the prestigious Cuisine Good Food Guide 2024/25. Haylee’s story and kai have been featured globally in Elle Gourmet (Canada), The Financial Review (Australia), and Croatia’s Iće&piće. She has proudly cooked for international guests such as Shaun Wallace (The Chase UK) and comedian Iliza Shlesinger, continuing to put Bluff and Southland on the world stage.

Liana Leota

My Netball Journey

Liana Leota is Assistant Coach for the 2025 Southern Steel netball team and comes with a proud record of netball achievements.
She was member of New Zealand's national netball team, the Silver Ferns, and played for  Southland's famous  Southern Sting netball team which won 6 national titles.
Liana has both played and coached netball in England where she lives with her husband and five children, and has travelled to Invercargill this year to assist Wendy Frew with the Steel.

Future Opportunities for Aquaculture in Southland

Bobbi has over 20 years’ experience in strategic and operational roles and is currently the GM Regional Strategy at Great South (Southland’s Regional Development Agency).  She has recently facilitated the development of the region’s long-term plan (Beyond 2025 Southland) in partnership with the Government and the region’s Iwi, businesses and communities.  This Plan aims to create a shared future vision and pathway for Murihiku Southland acknowledging the need to diversify the economy while also looking after its people and environment. A proud Southlander born and bred, Bobbi has dairy farmed in South Otago with her husband and son for the past 25 years while also balancing a 15-year career as an international netball umpire.

Unashamedly passionate about the Murihiku Southland region, Mr Fraser grew up on a farm at Heddon Bush before spending a decade in Dunedin where he studied and then worked in the electrical industry before returning to Invercargill. The owner of Miele Apiaries Premium Honey and co-founder of the Southland Food Hub, he has led the development of the Bluff Distillery Company and its iconic gin products.

Bluff Distillery's London Dry Gin recently achieved significant international recognition, winning multiple awards at The Gin Guide Awards in London. Along with many other awards, the gin was named "Product of the Year 2025", a title given to the gin that best combines award-winning design and branding with an exceptional spirit.

The Great Debate - ICC Elections

The Rotary Club of Invercargill has had a long tradition of supporting and promoting the importance of voting in both local and general elections. 
 
Over the years the Club has co-ordinated a number of events including meet the candidates, candidates Q & A's and debates. 
 
In 2023 the Club collaborated with the Southland Business Chamber on a “Meet the Candidates” evening for the public to hear from Invercargill Electorate candidates standing in the October General Election.
 
The Club is supporting the Southland Business Chamber with their 'The Great Debate' event on 19th August with volunteers on the ground.
 
We are encouraging members, friends and family to get along as attendees  and share details of this event in your networks encouraging people elegible to vote to get some insight into who maybe leading our City for the next 3 years to assist with their voting decision.

THE GREAT DEBATE: Invercargill City Mayoral & Council Candidates 2025

19 August | Ascot Park Hotel, Invercargill

MC - Duncan Garner – Award-winning TV broadcaster, fearless interviewer, and one of New Zealand’s most dynamic media personalities. 

5:30pm – 6:30pm: ICC  Candidate Speed Dating
Meet your Council candidates face-to-face in a fast-paced, small-group setting. Bring your questions and get the answers you need to make an informed choice.

7:00pm – 8:30pm: The Great Debate – Mayoral Candidates & Panel Discussion
Join Duncan Garner as he moderates a lively debate with Invercargill’s mayoral hopefuls. Expect hard-hitting questions, real answers, and plenty of community input.

Entry is free, but registration is essential!  You can register for both sessions or just attend the debate.

Omaui Landcare Charitable Trust Work Day

A 'hands on' Work Day is scheduled for Sunday 24th August to support Omaui Landcare Charitable Trust (OLCT) and the work they do as an environmental group eradicating pests in the Omaui Reserves so native wildlife can flourish.

Work tasks expected to include bait changing and maintenance work on the tracks.

Participants need strong footwear, coat, water bottle, snacks and a small back pack plus any personal medications required.

The meeting point on the day is 27 Whalers Crescent - Omaui.

The work day will conclude with a BBQ and beverage.

Please confirm your availability to be involved directly to President Michael.  We need to pre-register who is attending on the day. Michael can be contacted on  021 529 581 or by email blue.rider1@hotmail.com.

Option to car-pool to be co-oridnated closer to event date.

In the event of poor weather conditions we will notify  participants if the event is cancelled and arrange an alternative date.

Daffodil Day - Cancer Society - Street Collection

Our Club is once again supporting the Cancer Society with their annual fundriasing appeal - Daffodil Day - Friday 29th August.
 
Funds raised will help cancer patients and their families (whānau) get the care and practical support they need; from crucial help getting to treatment via the free driving service, through to specialist nursing and psychology support, and accommodation for those needing life-saving treatment far from home.
 
Club director Helen Cook will be co-ordinating our Clubs support with confirming volunteers for a collection table on a roster basis across the day.

Fundraiser - Host A Roast

Our 4th Host A Roast  "Fundraiser' is all set for:

Sunday 31st  August  - 12.30pm - Helen McCurdy's - Riverton

Everyone welcome - including families / children !

Host a roast is a Club fundraiser for the Southland Hospital Ronald McDonald Family Room.

Cost is a donation for Ronald McDonald House: $30 per adult (please pay to Invercargill Rotary online or bring cash to lunch)

Bring a plate of nibbles OR salad OR vegetables OR dessert OR anything you like

The Ronald McDonald Family Room, Southland Hospital, is an extension of the hospital that is directly connected to the Children’s and Neo Natal wards, a place to rest and regroup just moments away from their children.

There are also four overnight bedrooms, which are allocated on a daily basis by the Family Room Supervisor in consultation with the hospital’s medical staff.

Georgina Welsh

Map My Mouth

Georgina recently designed, developed and started her own business Map My Mouth, which is a dental check service to support better treatment pathways for Southlanders needing dental care.  She conducts dental assessments, x-rays, an intraoral scan and cancer check, then advises the next steps in the patient’s treatment.
Georgina was recently selected as the recipient of the Hon. Dame Annette King Award for Excellence in Leadership and Oral Health 2025, which was officially announced and presented at The New Zealand Oral Health Association (NZOHA) Conference in Christchurch.
