‘Good Guise’ – Roger & Julie Guise

In 2014 we converted our farm to dairy as part of our farm succession plan. Struggling with the impact of the slump in dairy prices, we looked at what was in our hand and how we could add value to it.

An Indian immigrant family approached us to source milk to manufacture paneer as it was unavailable in New Zealand.

That this product was unavailable in New Zealand seemed implausible to us but after 6 months of research we agreed; everything we could find was either frozen imported Indian product or a milk powder substitute.

This is a fascinating story which Roger and Julie will explain in more detail at our Rotary meeting on 7 May.

This is a special experience and an opportunity for members to connect directly with our community hands-on with "Circus Quirkus" - a non-animal circus spectacular.  

Our club has been involved with this event since 2003, and it's a successful fundraiser for our club.

Sponsored tickets to Circus Quirkus New Zealand are distributed to organisations focusing on support to less fortunate or special needs children and their families to allow them to have a some time out with the family.

The circus style entertainment is designed to inspire fun and excitement, with a show so full of energy and finesse that it lifts the spirits of everyone attending.

A group of members is requried to assist with ushering on the night - Stephen O'Connor is the Club contact for this event and will speak to support required for this event early in 2024.

The final walkway #4 is being collected and transported to Omaui on Saturday as constructed by MenzShed. 

A new date will be scheduled for planting in coming weeks around plants arrival and YMCA Project Lead being on leave.

Book Sorting with Lunch

The Scottish Hall is almost ready for the 2024 Book Sale.

As is tradition for our Club the Tuesday meeting before the Book Sale is a Lunch catered by Inner Wheel  followed by members helping with the final sorting / setting up of books.

Southland Foundation is a new charitable entity and one of 18 community foundations in New Zealand. The foundation is formally launching in May.  Its primary focus is to provide a simple and long-lasting way for people to help charitable causes in the Southland Community. Claire Mercep is a Year 13 student at Southland Girls’ High School and recently had the amazing opportunity to attend a Mind Body Soul 21-day course at Outward Bound.

Claire lives rurally on a sheep and beef farm in Southland,so she considers that this experience was a great opportunity for her to meet new people and develop new skills.

Karen has been a member of the Rotary Club of Invercargill Sunrise for 25 years.

She recently attended her 6^th Rotary International Convention in Singapore and is looking forward to sharing the experience with members.

Karen also plans to tell us about the key messages from Rotary International leaders, and provide an update about Polio and the impact that Rotary is making in communities around the world.

Our 3rd Host A Roast  "Fundraiser' is all set for:

Host a roast is a fundraiser for the Southland Hospital Ronald McDonald Family Room.

Last year we raised over $500 for the family room and President Chami has set a target of $600 donation this year.

The concept is a per person charge for the Roast is the 'donation'. 

If you cant attend the Host a Roast event you can still support this Club fundraiser and make a donation.

The Ronald McDonald Family Room, Southland Hospital, is an extension of the hospital that is directly connected to the Children’s and Neo Natal wards.

When families walk in, they forget they’re in a hospital. This is a place to rest and regroup just moments away from their children.

A home away from home for families who have children undergoing treatment at Southland Hospital.

There are also four overnight bedrooms, which are allocated on a daily basis by the Family Room Supervisor in consultation with the hospital’s medical staff.   

Rooms are provided to families on a greatest need basis and each family’s individual situation is taken into consideration.

Eloise Wallace is the Director of Te Unua Museum of Southland. She moved to Southland to take up this role in January this year, after almost nine years as Director of Tairāwhiti Museum in Gisborne. Eloise has worked in the museum sector for over 20 years in roles in the UK and New Zealand, and has been Co-Chair of Museums Aotearoa, the national body for museum and galleries since 2021.  She also serves as a trustee with the Air Force Museum of New Zealand.

Peter Dunn grew up in the village of Waikaka north of Gore, then in Gore itself. He attended Gore High School (as it was called then). He did a carpentry apprenticeship in Gore and as a tradesman worked in Gore, Athol and Invercargill. In 1984 he was accepted for ministry training in the Presbyterian Church, completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and a Bachelor of Divinity in Systematic Theology through Otago University. In 1990 Peter and Helen were called to the Waipu Parish forty minutes south of Whangarei, a great place to raise five children with its sticky climate, bare feet in the winter, beautiful beaches, and the smokestacks of the Marsden Point Oil Refinery not far away. The Northland experience did create at least one family rift. Dad supports the Highlanders or the Southland Stags, the boys support the Blues or the Northland Taniwha. Peter is not a scientist but is well-versed in the scientific method. In his vocation, he reads widely and contributes to the Climate Change discussions within the Presbyterian Church. This task will increase next year as he takes up the elected role of the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand. Peter is looking forward to doing a practice run with the club presenting thoughts and comparisons from the latest debates of interest on climate change.

Senga White is a local history storyteller, podcaster and educator. She is also the heritage
events and activities project manager for Heritage South and is passionate about sharing
the history stories that have helped shape our province.
Under her Senga’s Stories brand, she has been telling tales at 360 at the Langlands over a
cuppa or a glass of bubbles and, as part of her History Detectives in Action education
programme, she can be spotted in her pink jacket taking classes from local schools on
Walking Tour Experiences around the Invercargill CBD or along the Otepuni sharing the
history of our city with the younger generation. She has plans to develop these into local
history walking tours as a visitor experience and a fun, informative family activity for the
community.
Senga has a series of local history podcasts in pre-production and, as the co-host and
researcher for Check It Out on Radio Southland, she created episodes, including a series to
complement the South Invercargill Heritage Trail, which you can listen to through the Check

Nicola is an insurance financial adviser for Total Life. Beyond her professional commitment, Nicola is a devoted wife and mother of four (including twins). Two years ago her family relocated to Invercargill and have enjoyed exploring the South Island’s scenic beauty. Nicola is proud of her Māori heritage; her iwi include Ngāti Kahungunu and Ngaruahine. Nicola is the Secretary and Grants Co-ordinator for the Multiple Birth Club.

Sarah works as the Accounts Manager at Agribusiness Consultants. Prior to this Sarah worked as a Data Analyst within the tertiary education sector for 10 years after completing her Bachelor of Commerce at Otago University and her Accounting Traineeship with a local accounting firm. Sarah and her husband Bevan own a small lifestyle block on the outskirts of Invercargill and have four children (including triplets). Outside of work, her children keep her busy with their sporting schedules. Sarah is a born and bred Southlander who enjoys hunting and hiking, and is the Treasurer and Newsletter Co-ordinator for the Multiple Birth Club.
