The spread of misinformation in the modern age
Jun 13, 2023
Brett Solvander has spent a career in media and communications, with television production being a part of this, but he is better known as a public relations practitioner, who has worked in various senior communications roles in both the public and private sectors, here and overseas. Brett has also worked for government ministers as a ministerial press secretary and established his own communications consultancy in the mid 1990’s with business partner and wife, Wilma Falconer. In his presentation Brett will focus on the spread of misinformation in the modern age and how we as information consumers can navigate propaganda, lies and fake news to get to the truth. This subject has meaning for everyone interested in getting to what we understand to be the undiluted facts so that we can make well informed decisions for ourselves and for those we care about |

The Grace Street Project
Jun 20, 2023
Janette Malcom, Mervyn English & Terry Nicholas are trustees of the The Invercargill Community Connections Charitable Trust (IC2). The Trust was formed in December 2020 after research established a strong need, and support for, a proposed new community facility in South Invercargill – currently known as the Grace Street Project. The Grace Street Project is a community-led initiative to create a multi-purpose facility in south Invercargill with the goal of fostering a safe, welcoming, and thriving community for all. Janette Malcolm Janette has a wide variety of public and private experience including international business, law and community development, which is a particular passion of hers. Living in Southland since 2008, she established and ran South Alive and subsequently established and chaired the social enterprise business The Pantry. She has been part of the Grace Street project from the start having seen the huge local need for physical space that can provide opportunities for learning and growth in the community. Terry Nicholas Terry is the Manager of Hokonui Rūnanga, the Hokonui Representative on the Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu tribal council, and the Portfolio Director for Murihiku Regeneration. Terry has been involved with Hokonui Rūnanga and has been the Hokonui Te Rūnanga O Ngāi Tahu representative since January 1999. A champion for community development and creating opportunities for all in Murihiku, Terry sees the Grace Street Project as being pivotal to enhancing opportunities for those in South Invercargill – particularly at-risk youth. Mervyn English Mervyn grew up in Southland, and as a young man, he spent considerable time in Southland’s mountains. His career took him to other major cities, where he held senior roles in both the public and private sectors. This experience has been across multiple sectors, health, social services, energy, agriculture, and conservation. After serving on a number of boards, he also has significant experience in public policy, delivery, and governance. He has returned to Southland and is enjoying contributing to this community. "Undertaking and Overtaking"
Oct 31, 2023
The “ Undertaking” is for the ten years that Dave spent working as an “ Undertaker “ or Funeral Director . Dave followed an uncle into the profession and had wanted to do so from age 18 – his uncle told him to go away and get life experience first …he did that, then entered the profession and went on to qualify as an Embalmer, Funeral Director and Monumental Mason. The “ Overtaking “ is for the ten years Dave spent working for varied ambulance services. Dave was a volunteer ambulance officer for many years before entering into that field full time. He took up ambulance work full time after leaving the “ Undertaking “ . He worked in both New Zealand and Australia and ended up as an Advanced Care Paramedic. Dave did side studies in Anaesthesia and Psychology . Dave has been asked by a publisher to pen a book titled “ Undertaking and Overtaking “ to speak of his many years involved in Ambulance Work and Funeral Directing.
