National Science Forum Experiences

Mar 07, 2023

Harri Pickett

I'm 16 years old and a Year 13 student at Southland Girls' High School. I'm passionate about biological sciences; my goal is to work and travel internationally to research remote ecosystems and organisms, which I hope to do by studying overseas in the UK next year.

MaiaLumsden

I am in Year 13 at Southland Girls' High School. I am heading towards a career in Science but I am unsure of which field in particular, hence I am immensely grateful to Rotary for giving me the opportunity to attend the 2023 Rotary National Science and Technology Forum.

Rotary Car Boot Sale
Mar 25, 2023 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

New event to raise funds for Mitey - Sir John Kirwan Foundation's programme for mental health education in primary schools.

What:                   Rotary Invercargill Car Boot Sale

When:                  Saturday 25th March 10am til 2pm

Where:                 Ascot Park Raceway

Event Concept:

People book a site for a car, or a gazebo, to sell anything that they own and no longer need.

A site costs $20 and this $20 goes to the Mitey Mental Health Education fundraising.

Whatever the site holder sells, makes on the day, is for them to keep... unless of course, they want to donate it to Sir John Kirwan Foundation for the Mitey Programme.

We are welcoming people who may have arts, crafts or handmade items to sell to book a site and sell from their car boot as well.

We have extended an invite to a number of 'mobile' food outlets to come and join us on the day.

Want to know more about what we are fundraising for visit: https://jkfoundation.org.nz/

If you would like to support this event by helping out on the day or to book a car boot site contact us by email:  rcinvercargill@gmail.com

4th Week Social Event - Jingo
Mar 28, 2023 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Come & join us for an opportunity for people new to Jingo to experience and for those who have been before to gain further insight into how the event runs for our upcoming Jingo Fundraiser.

Everyone welcome – anyone reading this bulletin is welcome to join us

What:                  Social event - Jingo NIght

When:                Tuesday 28th March  - 7pm

Where:                Waikiwi Tavern

Members of the Social Committee will connect directly with members on this with a text or phone call

Jingo is just like Bingo but replaces the numbers with music. Players listen closely as the song snippets provide a clue as to the name of the song. Once the title or artist of the song is figured out and found on the game card, it gets marked off. Easy! The Jingo host will decide whether players are completing a line, a cross, a diagonal, a shape or a full house. When a player completes their card, they call out “JINGO!” and the Jingo host will verify the card. Jingo is fun for everyone! Individuals can have a card all to themselves or teams can share a card and put their heads together to beat the competition.

Ali Undorf-Lay

Aquaculture

May 23, 2023

Ali is the Industry Liaison Manager at Sanford in Bluff and is passionate about the sea and keen to take the mystery out of what happens when a vessel disappears behind the horizon line and starts catching fish. Ali says "if people know where we work and why we do things the way we do, and that our industry is science based and sophisticated, it’s not such a big jump to think we take the challenge of responsible fishing seriously."   While not born into a fisher family, Ali cares deeply about the coast and the wellbeing of our communities supported by the sea.

In her job as Industry Liaison Manager at Sanford, a large New Zealand seafood company, Ali is a conduit between Sanford's people, the ocean environment and other marine users – officials, seafood companies, eNGOs, dolphins. Sanford’s goal is ocean leadership; to be the world’s best seafood company which means continually striving for excellence, looking beyond the first solution to find the best.

Sanford is New Zealand's oldest and largest seafood company - they farm salmon and mussels and hold 19.7% of New Zealand commercial fishing quota. Sanford has been listed on the New Zealand stock market since 1924, and is focused on sustainability and on maximising the value of the resources gathered from our oceans, enabling long term value creation from oceans teeming with life. Sanford sites can be found in 13 locations around New Zealand and they are a team of 1,400 staff and sharefishers across the country.  Committed to innovation, our scientists are on a mission to find new ways to make the most of the life-enhancing properties of seafood, from anti-inflammatory supplements to skin-nurturing collagen.
