Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) Experience at Queenstown Forum
Mar 05, 2024
Gemma currently works at the Southland District Council. Gemma’s leadership journey started in her home town of Cromwell with Girl Guiding and Brass Band groups before moving to Invercargill to study. After finding that there was no public group in Invercargill for youth to join, Gemma founded the Southern Adventurers' Guild, and discovered that there were many mental and social benefits for people in the community as a result. Gemma then helped to integrate a management structure that supported youth to build their own leadership and management skills. She has been chairman of the Guild for three years and also runs a Girl Guiding unit. In the future Gemma hopes to help the community further with other projects and to create better support systems for youth.

Working with International Aid Agencies for 20 Years
Mar 19, 2024
Barb Walker was born in Riverton, with parents who were school teachers. She and her siblings lived in rural communities all over NZ, as their father was the headmaster of a number of rural schools. Barb was called by God at the age of 12 to become a missionary nurse and midwife. After her training, Barb left New Zealand and spent nearly 20 years working in Africa and Asia, in War Zones, famine camps , refugees camps, rescuing boat people from the South China Sea and in mission hospitals. A death threat while working in Mozambique, ended Barb overseas work and she was evacuated out of Mozambique and came back to New Zealand 1996. Barb then got involved in local health trusts, working as a manager in the Hokianga and Milton. In 2000 she was awarded a Queen Service Order . Barb was ordained as an Anglican Priest in 2004, in Dunedin, then managed a retirement village and then worked as the lead Hospital Chaplain at Hastings Hospital. In 2020 Barb published her book Purple Hands, which tells her story so far. She retired in 2021 and called by God , she came home to Southland to come a Volunteer Rural Chaplain in Southland region. |

Rotary Environmental day: Planning is now being finalised for the Rotary Clean up day on 23 March. Kevin Mulrooney President of the South Club and Dave McKissock are working with ICC in regard to their health and safety protocols and procedures, and also to obtain a tab pass to enter the waste centre for the rubbish gathered. The plan is as follows: All clubs to meet at the Stead Street Reserve at 9am on 23 March for a health and safety briefing and instructions. We would like this project to be an interactive club event, so would prefer clubs to mix up so they can meet other Rotarians outside their own club.
Areas to be actioned. We hope to divide into 8 groups of 8 or more Group 1 and 2 – Clean up the Waihopai River side from Racecourse road to Stead Street Group 3 and 4 – Clean up around the estuary, starting from Stead Street Wharf Group 5 and 6 – Clean up along the roadside out to the beach from the Oreti Bridge to the Beach entrance and also along the roadside of Sandy point. Group 7 and 8 – Clean up along the beach, North and South of the entrance (Low tide is at 6:30am and high tide is at 1pm so we need to get this area done before high tide) Post Clean up we hope to hold a barbeque at Fosbender Park around 12.30pm What to bring; Hi Viz Vests, gloves, need one trailer per group for rubbish, good safe footwear, sun hat, wet weather gear, drink bottle, and $5 for barbeque contribution. My Experience at the Rotary National Science and Technology Forum
Apr 16, 2024
My name is Holly Goble and I am currently a Year 13 student at Southland Girls’ High School. At school I am one of a group of 11 amazing prefects and this role is one that I have taken on wholeheartedly. My academics are an area in which I pride myself, which is why I am coming to share my experiences at the latest Rotary National Science and Technology Forum. Outside of school I am a member of the Waihopai Rowing Club. This sport has been a part of my life for the last 4 years, and even with the 8 trainings a week, it remains as my passion |

Ross is looking for support with deck construction at the Conyers Street units on Saturday 4th May from 9am - If you can assist, please contact Ross 021-333-363
Background of the project is below:
Following the sale of the Rotary Dream Home in 2018 – a committee made up of representatives of each Rotary Club have been working on the follow-on project to establish two units for the Breathing Space Southland Trust (BSST) to use as emergency accommodation. The project is back on track with completion targeted for end of June 2024, after encountering challenges due to Covid-19, followed by building supplies issues and consent delays.
The units have now been secured on piles at the Conyers Street location. Drainage, electricity, and water connections have been installed with internal plumbing, and Heat Pump Installation underway.
The remaining work to complete the project involves fencing, landscaping, painting of units and construction of the deck is being split between the Club’s with Club Member Ross co-ordinating our Club’s contribution.

Good Guise Cheese
May 07, 2024
‘Good Guise’ – Roger & Julie Guise In 2014 we converted our farm to dairy as part of our farm succession plan. Struggling with the impact of the slump in dairy prices, we looked at what was in our hand and how we could add value to it. An Indian immigrant family approached us to source milk to manufacture paneer as it was unavailable in New Zealand. That this product was unavailable in New Zealand seemed implausible to us but after 6 months of research we agreed; everything we could find was either frozen imported Indian product or a milk powder substitute. This is a fascinating story which Roger and Julie will explain in more detail at our Rotary meeting on 7 May.

This is a special experience and an opportunity for members to connect directly with our community hands-on with "Circus Quirkus" - a non-animal circus spectacular. Our club has been involved with this event since 2003, and it's a successful fundraiser for our club. Sponsored tickets to Circus Quirkus New Zealand are distributed to organisations focusing on support to less fortunate or special needs children and their families to allow them to have a some time out with the family. The circus style entertainment is designed to inspire fun and excitement, with a show so full of energy and finesse that it lifts the spirits of everyone attending. A group of members is requried to assist with ushering on the night - Stephen O'Connor is the Club contact for this event and will speak to support required for this event early in 2024.
